High-Country Health Food and Cafe in Mariposa California

June 5, 2026 – Inyo County Search & Rescue officials report that on Saturday, May 23, 2026, Inyo SAR responded to a hiker who experienced a significant seizure-related medical emergency near Trail Crest at an elevation exceeding 13,000 feet. Information obtained during the rescue indicated the individual had experienced seizure activity prior to the incident.

Eight rescuers assembled and met CHP helicopter H-42 in Lone Pine at 12:15 P.M. Meanwhile, the subject's three hiking partners were able to slowly move him down the snowfield next to the 99 Switchbacks towards Trail Camp, so they would at least get to some lower altitude and hopefully shorten the time until rescue.

CHP was unable to fly higher than Outpost Camp that day, so 6 rescuers were inserted - 2 at a time over the course of 3 flights. They then hiked up to Trail Camp, and the first two rescuers met the subject and his hiking partners at 1:50 P.M. nearby. With the help of rescuers, the patient was able to walk to Outpost Camp where he then got picked up by the helicopter and flown to Lone Pine.

This incident highlights the importance of carefully evaluating one's physical condition before and during high-altitude backcountry travel. Individuals with a history of seizures or other medical conditions should consult with their healthcare provider before undertaking strenuous alpine activities.

If a significant medical event occurs while in the backcountry, hikers should strongly consider discontinuing their trip and seeking medical evaluation rather than continuing into remote or higher-elevation terrain.

Inyo SAR is an all-volunteer and unpaid, professional non-profit 501(c)3 organization in cooperation with and under the authority of the Inyo County Sheriff's Office. Providing search and rescue services to Inyo County and its visitors is only possible thanks to donations.
