June 8, 2026 - On Thursday, Assemblymember Mia Bonta (D-Oakland) released the following statement in response to the President’s plans to fund a coal terminal in West Oakland:
"Donald Trump has once again chosen polluters over people. By injecting millions of taxpayer dollars into a coal terminal that Oaklanders have fought for a decade to stop, this administration is sentencing West Oakland, one of the most pollution-burdened communities in California, to generational harm. Our children will breathe that coal dust. Our elders will pay with their health. And the families who have fought the hardest to keep this terminal out of their neighborhood will bear the highest cost. As the state legislator for this community, I will use every tool available to advocate for our interests. Oakland doesn’t need Trump’s dirty coal,” said Assemblymember Mia Bonta.
Assemblymember Mia Bonta represents California’s 18th Assembly District encompassing the East Bay including Oakland, Alameda, and Emeryville. She also serves as chair of the Assembly Health Committee and the California Legislative Children’s Caucus.
