Fatal Crash on Road 16 at Avenue 14

August 1, 2026 – Madera CHP officials report that early on Friday, July 31, 2026, just before 6:00 a.m., CHP Madera Area officers responded to a two-vehicle traffic crash, at the intersection of Road 16 and Avenue 14.

A preliminary investigation indicates:

A 21-year-old man from Madera, CA was driving a white 2002 Pontiac Firebird, traveling southbound on Road 16, approaching the intersection at Avenue 14.  A 57-year-old man from Madera, CA was driving a black 2019 Lincoln Navigator, westbound on Avenue 14, approaching the intersection at Road 16.  At this location, traffic on Avenue 14 has the right-of-way and traffic on Road 16 is controlled by posted stop signs.

The driver of the Pontiac failed to yield the right-of-way and entered the intersection, directly into the path of the Lincoln.  The front of the Lincoln collided with the left side of the Pontiac.  After the crash, both vehicles came to rest in a cornfield, on the southwest corner of the intersection.

The 21-year-old man in the Pontiac sustained major injuries and was transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.  The 57-year-old man in the Lincoln did not sustain any injuries.

Both parties were wearing their seat belts.  Alcohol and/or drugs are not suspected to be a factor at this time.

Stop signs require a complete stop every time.  After coming to a complete stop, look in all directions before proceeding.  Only move when the intersection is clear. Stay alert and avoid distractions.  A full stop gives you time to see hazards and prevent crashes
