August 20, 2026 – Winton, CA – Merced County Sheriff's Office officials report that on August 18 at approximately 5:30 p.m., Merced County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the 6700 block of Cypress Avenue in Winton for a report of a domestic incident involving a firearm.

During the investigation, deputies learned that 46-year-old Raul Guardado Jr. had threatened to kill the victim and fired a firearm at her. The victim sustained minor injuries from broken glass during the altercation.

Deputies believed Guardado was still armed and had barricaded himself inside a residence. Due to the severity of the incident, the Merced County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team, Crisis Negotiation Team, and detectives responded to assist.

SWAT deputies located Guardado inside the residence and he continued to refuse to follow commands. A Sheriff’s K-9 was deployed and assisted in taking Guardado into custody. Guardado was treated for minor injuries and subsequently booked into the Merced County Jail for attempted murder, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and criminal threats.
