Attempted Homicide of Corrections Officer at California Health Care Facility Under Investigation

October 16, 2026 – STOCKTON, CA – California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) officials are investigating the attempted homicide of peace officers at California Health Care Facility (CHCF).

At 9:36 p.m., while conducting a wellness check on an unresponsive incarcerated person, four officers attempted to enter a restricted housing unit cell. As officers opened the door, Joadanus Olivas, 39, attempted to exit the cell with two improvised weapons. Officers were able to get Olivas back into his cell and restrain him. Four officers were injured during the incident and were treated at an outside medical facility and were subsequently released.

Olivas was transported to an outside medical facility for treatment of his injuries. He has been transferred to another CDCR institution and remains on restricted housing status.

Olivas was received from Los Angeles County on October 28, 2010. He was sentenced to life with parole for second-degree attempted murder. He received 583 days of pre-sentence credit for time served while awaiting sentencing

The case will be referred to the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office for possible felony convictions. CDCR’s Inspector General has been notified.

CHCF provides medical and mental health care to incarcerated people who have the most severe and long-term needs. Opened in 2013, CHCF also provides inpatient and outpatient mental health treatment, has a diagnostic center, a dental clinic and dialysis unit; and provides services to inmate-patients needing or recovering from surgery. The facility also has a palliative care unit and a memory care unit for inmate-patients with dementia. The Stockton facility currently houses 2,455 inmates and employs approximately 3,500 staff.
