Historic Mining Equipment in Mariposa County
Cone grinders lie in wait to just possibly be used again one day.The ore (quartz with gold in it) would be put into these grinders then crushed very finely, then these fines would be run over copper plates that would be coated with mercury to catch the gold.
October 17, 2026 - Mariposa County officials say mining has been part of Mariposa County’s history and economy since the Gold Rush, playing an important role in the growth of the region. Today, it remains an important part of the County’s economic landscape and is the first sector being addressed through Mariposa County’s economic development initiative.
Currently in development, the Mining Strategic Plan will identify opportunities and challenges and guide future mining-related strategies while considering community priorities, environmental resources, infrastructure, public services, and Mariposa County’s rural character.
The plan builds on the County’s broader economic development goals and will help establish a coordinated approach to future mining-related opportunities. It will not approve any individual mining project or land-use entitlement. Rather, it will provide a strategic framework for evaluating opportunities, identifying needs, and guiding future planning and policy decisions.
