Scam Prevention Tips
October 25, 2026 – El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office officials report that they have recently seen an increase in phone and computer scams targeting community members. These scams often pressure victims into sending money or share personal information. As we approach the holiday season, please read, and follow the below tips to protect yourself from these scams.
- Always verify who you’re talking to before sharing any personal information by phone, text, or email. Scammers often "spoof" their calls by making the incoming phone number look like it's from someone else.
- If someone claims a loved one is in jail and needs bail money, or money for any early release such as ankle monitor services, confirm with the jail before sending any funds.
- Be very cautious of anyone requesting payment through gift cards; Legitimate businesses will never ask for this.
- Be very cautious when providing your banking information remotely; Always verify the site/source is legitimate and avoid clicking on any links sent by a solicitor.
- Do not allow anyone to access your computer remotely unless you are certain the source is legitimate.
- Avoid transferring money between accounts based solely on a phone call, even if the caller claims to be from your bank.
- Be very cautious if a caller pressures you to stay on the phone call and specifically requests you rush to a location to send a payment; This is a common tactic for scammers.
Scammers often create urgency to trick you. When someone calls you and asks for money or tells you that there's an urgent matter with your finances, it’s safest to pause, verify their identity, and confirm the request is legitimate. Stay vigilant and protect yourself, and please share this message with loved ones to help keep our community remain safe!
