Scam Alert!

October 11, 2026 – San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office officials warn residents about a scam targeting Scam Alertindividuals in the South County area that has resulted in victims losing thousands of dollars.

In both cases, the victims were contacted by suspects claiming that a family member had been arrested and that money was urgently needed to cover bail and other legal fees. The suspects posed as attorneys or other legal representatives to make the situation appear legitimate.

To further convince the victims, the suspects arranged for someone pretending to be the arrested family member to speak with them over the phone.

The victims were then instructed to withdraw large amounts of cash from their bank accounts, place the money in a box, and hand it over to a courier who arrived at their homes to collect it.

In one case, the victim lost $16,000. In the second case, the victim lost nearly $10,000.

In both incidents, the victims later contacted their actual family members and discovered they had never been arrested. By that time, the money was gone.

These scams rely heavily on fear, urgency, and emotional manipulation. The suspects pressure victims into acting immediately, often keeping them on the phone throughout the entire process to prevent them from contacting family members or law enforcement to verify the story.

The Sheriff's Office reminds the public that law enforcement will never call you to ask for money for any reason. If you receive a call claiming a loved one has been arrested and demanding immediate payment, hang up and contact the Sheriff's Office directly to verify the status of your family member.

Residents should also be aware of several warning signs associated with these scams:

Demands for immediate payment. Scammers create a sense of urgency to prevent victims from thinking clearly.

Requests for cash payments. Never withdraw large amounts of cash to hand over to someone claiming to represent law enforcement or the courts.

Pressure to remain on the phone. Scammers often refuse to let victims end the call so they cannot verify the information.

Instructions to keep the situation secret. Scammers may discourage victims from speaking with other family members or friends.

The Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Unit (MCU) is actively investigating both incidents to determine whether they are connected and whether additional crimes may be related to this scheme.

Anyone who has experienced a similar scam or has information regarding these incidents is encouraged to contact the Sheriff's Office Detective Division at 805-781-4500.

The Sheriff's Office also encourages residents to talk with their family members, friends, and neighbors about these scams, so they recognize the warning signs and do not become victims themselves. Sharing this information could prevent someone from losing thousands of dollars.
