July 12, 2026 – Merced County Sheriff's Office officials report that on Thursday evening, deputies responded to
the Merced River near Henderson Park in Snelling for a report of people stranded in the river.
Deputies learned that two adults and two juveniles, one of whom was partially paralyzed, had become trapped after their raft became lodged on an object along the river. Our deputies quickly located the individuals and safely removed them from the water. The Merced Sheriff's Sable 5 helicopter landed next to the river and deputies loaded them into the helicopter. They were flown back to Henderson Park, where they received medical aid. Thankfully, everyone involved is safe. Incidents like this serve as an important reminder that river conditions can change quickly and become dangerous.
Before heading to the river, remember to:
- Always wear a properly fitted life jacket
- Never underestimate the strength and speed of moving water
- Stay alert for hazards such as fallen trees, strainers, rocks, and strong currents
- Avoid alcohol or drugs while on the water
- Never raft, kayak, or swim alone
- Check river conditions and weather before you go
- Keep children within arm's reach and under constant supervision
We want to recognize our deputies and flight crew, including our Sheriff Warnke, for their teamwork in bringing this rescue to a safe conclusion.
